Malta's Labour Party Secures Historic 4th Term

(MENAFN) Malta's ruling Labour Party clinched a landmark fourth consecutive election victory on Sunday, returning Prime Minister Robert Abela to power following a snap parliamentary vote — though with a notably slimmer margin than in previous contests.

Data compiled independently by both major parties indicated the winning margin could fall below 19,000 votes, pointing to a significantly stronger performance by the opposition Nationalist Party compared to prior elections — a result that will likely fuel debate about Labour's political dominance despite the historic milestone.

A jubilant Abela framed the outcome as a collective triumph rather than a partisan one. "Today's result is a historic fourth win," he said, calling for national unity and urging supporters to celebrate respectfully. He described the result as "a win for all Maltese and Gozitans" and confirmed his government would press ahead with delivering its full electoral program.

Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg graciously conceded defeat and extended his congratulations to Abela, but struck a defiant and optimistic tone in defeat, declaring the campaign had marked "the rebirth of something beautiful" for his party.

"You should never be embarrassed for wanting change," Borg told supporters in a message posted on Facebook, vowing the opposition would redouble its efforts in the years ahead.

Maltese voters went to the polls on Saturday to elect all 65 members of the country's House of Representatives for a fresh five-year term. Abela had triggered the early vote several months ahead of schedule, citing the need for political stability in the face of deepening global uncertainty.
